“The appreciation extends to everyone I work with, from the management right down to the person that’s cleaned the plane.”

“When I’m a passenger there’s a feeling of excitement and discovery. But as a pilot you’ve got preparation, responsibility, and clarity of thought. You’ve also got the appreciation for what you do and the importance of presenting yourself properly to the crew and to the passengers.

The appreciation extends to everyone I work with, from the management right down to the person that’s cleaned the plane. Recently we had a ten-month old baby boy on board with a fever. The passenger consulted the cabin crew and once med-link was called their advice was to take the baby and the whole family off the airplane.

I could hear what was going on because the flight deck door was open, and being a father of small children and having some time because we were dealing with a technical problem, I went to speak to them personally. I decided to phone a friend who is one of the doctors at the airport and asked if he could come aboard to make it easier for them. He checked the little baby, and cleared him for flight.

That’s a small touch, but the last thing the family would have wanted was to have to disembark. It came from my experience travelling as a parent.”
